The battleship USS South Dakota (BB-57) maneuvers at high speed to avoid a Japanese "Kate" torpedo bomber flying towards it during the Battle of Santa Cruz on October 26, 1942. The South Dakota provided invaluable anti-aircraft defenses to American naval forces in the battle and was credited with downing some 26 enemy aircraft.
