Landing Vehicle Tracked (LVT)

Invented by Donald Roebling, Jr. and adopted by the Marine Corps, the landing vehicle tracked series combined the ability of propulsion through the ocean, crawling over coral reefs and then breasting surf to deposit troops or cargo ashore. The LVT-4 improved on earlier models by moving the engine from the rear to behind the driving compartment to make room for a spacious troop/cargo compartment with a rear ramp to facilitate loading and unloading.
