The Navy accepted millions of new men during the war. Many of these new sailors were from landlocked states and had no previous experience with ships. The Navy instituted one of the largest on the job training programs in history by producing study guides for advancement in ratings. This book prepared a seaman for the qualification exam for the rating of coxswain, which was the name given to a third class boatswain's mate until 1948.
