The litter, or stretcher, was the primary means of evacuating wounded men from the front lines. The US Army used several types of litters during the war, but each was designed to fit the existing brackets on ambulances, ships, and other vehicles. In theory, a casualty could travel from the front lines all the way back to the United States without ever having to get off the litter that picked him up in the field.
