U.S. Army Signal Corps photograph, Gift in Memory of Maurice T. White, 2011.065
The winter of 1944 was one of the coldest on record, leading to frozen ground that was brutal on the tracks of Sherman tanks. This photo illustrates the laborious process by which a tank's tracks were replaced in the field when a recovery and repair vehicle was not available. This photo was taken at Camp Cooke, California and shows a training crew of A Company, 710th Tank Battalion in March 1944.
