The United States started the war with the WWI vintage M1917, helmet. The M1 was adopted in 1941 and was heavily based on the German Stahlhelm. All helmets were produced to one size, with an insertable liner being adjusted depending on the wearer's head size, allowing for huge quantities of the helmet to be produced. It remained in service until the 1980s in the American military, and still sees use in foreign militaries today.
