The Model 24 Stick Grenade was created during World War I to help German storm troopers (specialists in storming enemy trenches) clear trenches and bunkers. They are concussion grenades, and depend on the force of the explosion to cause damage. In the tight confines of a trench or bunker this is ideal, but in open combat the explosion usually lacks the force necessary to cause significant damage at any ranges beyond the immediate range of the explosion. The stick allows the grenade to be thrown farther, but makes it more difficult to use at close ranges when the grenade may need to be pushed through a firing slit or dropped over the edge of a parapet.
