Drs. James and Beverly Shaver, in memory of Larry and Genie Hirshbach, 2011.255.002
Blotters are used when working with fountain or quill-tipped pens. Paper is attached to the bottom, and the blotter is pressed over freshly-written or signed documents to help absorb the excess ink left behind. This blotter was discovered by Larry Hirshbach under rubble in Hitler's office in the Reich Chancellery, along with a coat hanger. The marble on the blotter is a perfect match to that used in Hitler's personal office desk.
