Many GIs were eager to gather any souvenirs they could as mementoes of their service in Europe. These Fabric samples were taken from the upholstery of chairs and other furniture found in the home of Hermann Goering. Even years after the war ended, plaster from walls and fragments of famous Nazi-era buildings were highly sought after, and items like these would have been the envy of many servicemen serving in occupied Germany.
