In order to qualify for duty aboard submarines, officers and enlisted men alike underwent a grueling course in which they learned to operate every piece of equipment on the boat, regardless of their individual ratings and specialties. Herman "Dutch" Prager used this notebook to become a qualified submariner. He made four patrols aboard USS Kingfish (SS-234) during the war.
