Replica USS Wahoo (SS-238) Battle Flag

The National WWII Museum, EDU.122.002

Many US submarine crews adopted battle flags that told of their boats' successes on patrol. Although the Wahoo was named for a fish found in the Caribbean, the crew chose as its mascot an Indian brave. The Wahoo's battle flag displays a headdress, in which each feather represents one of the nineteen ships sunk by the sub on her patrols.
