The M1 Garand rifle and M1 Carbine are both gas-operating semi-automatic rifles capable of a higher rate of fire than most battle rifles of the Second World War, which usually depended on bolt-action firing mechanisms. The Garand uses a larger .30-06 round which offers more power and therefore better range, penetration, and accuracy. However, because the semi-automatic rifle can fire this large round so quickly, it must be heavy (weighing approximately 9 pounds) to help reduce the rifle's recoil so that it can maintain accuracy. The M1 Carbine has a smaller .30 caliber carbine round which is weaker than the .30-06, but it can be fired in rapid succession without losing accuracy. This allows for a significantly lighter and shorter weapon of just over 5 pounds.
