J.W. Clark reported to New Orleans in May 1943 to sit for his Master's license examination. Having distinguished himself during the sinking of the SS Wade Hamilton, Clark received the rare honor of being appointed master of a new ship, the SS Richard M. Johnson, before he took his examination. Clark easily passed his exam, and on May 29, 1943, he received this license. He commanded the Johnson for the rest of the war.
