Large naval vessels such as battleships and aircraft carriers carried thousands of men to sea. The famous aircraft carrier USS Enterprise was very much like a steel city at sea. Among her sailors were cobblers, barbers, cooks, laundrymen, and tailors. Telephone directories were an essential parts of ship's equipment, allowing the carrier's 2,200 men to use the ship's telephone network efficiently.
