Austin Merrill used this flight log to record his participation in the Battle of Midway. On June 4, 1942, Merrill successfully bombed the carrier Hiryu. Afterwards, Merrill and his rear seat gunner Dallas Bergeron were jumped by Japanese fighters, and Bergeron was severely wounded. Merrill flew again on June 5 and 6 with Dallas's brother Fred, scoring a hit on the heavy cruiser Mikuma. Austin Merrill received the Navy Cross for his actions at Midway.
