The Type 99 Arisaka rifle featured several additional components over the earlier Type 38 rifle, including a folding wire monopod. This attachment was designed to assist with bracing the rifle against cover or while in the prone position. This feature proved problematic in combat, as the device's height meant that a firing soldier using the deployed monopod was more exposed than one not using it.
