Gift of Capt. A.D. Gus Caire, 2007.003.001
In the early hours of May 11, 1945, the destroyer USS Evans was serving alongside a squadron of smaller vessels on a radar picket when they were attacked by more than 100 Japanese aircraft northwest of Okinawa. The ships shot down many of the Japanese planes, but four kamikazes managed to strike the Evans. This propeller belonged to one of the kamikazes that struck the ship and was preserved by a salvage officer on the Evans, Capt. A.D. "Gus" Caire.
