Gift in Memory of Johnny Tremonte, 2009.554.013
On March 19, 1945 the carrier USS Franklin had just finished conducting sorties against the Japanese mainland when it was attacked by a single Japanese bomber. The carrier was struck by two 550 lb bombs which caused the armed and fully-fueled aircraft on its deck and within its hangers to explode, killing hundreds of sailors including Johnny Tremonte. The families of service people killed in the line of duty received form certificates like these from the President confirming that their loved ones had been killed.
