Mildred Aupied (sixth from right, standing) was a welder for Delta Shipbuilding Company. A graduate of Terrebone High School, Mildred got a job for the telephone company in New Orleans in 1941. At the outset of the war she heard of an opportunity for women to become welders and jumped at the chance to learn something new and earn more money. She went to welding school and in 1942, she left the telephone company and got a job at Delta Shipbuilding Company on the Industrial Canal. Mildred worked at the factory for the duration of the war and helped produce roughly five Liberty ships.
