Training Record for Nurse Alberta Holt

Courtesy Dr. Howard Lindsey

Alberta Holt received a nursing degree from DePaul University. She volunteered for the Army Nurse Corps in May 1942 and served with the 25th Station Hospital, the first black medical unit to deploy overseas. Holt was one of a very small number of black nurses accepted into the Army Nurse Corps during World War II because of a racist quota system. In September 1945, only 479 of the Army Nurse Corps’ 50,000 women were African American.
