Telescopes of various makes and models were used by artillery units for observing enemy action, monitoring artillery bursts, reading horizontal angles and adjusting fire direction. This battery commander's telescope was typically used by forward observers and can be used either in a vertical position for periscopic vision or a horizontal position for stereoscopic vision.
