Disease, especially malaria, sometimes delivered more patients to the hospital than enemy guns. Atabrine was one of the important weapons at the disposal of the Preventative Medicine Service of the Office of the Surgeon General. Antimalarial drugs, combined with insecticides, helped to keep US forces in fighting condition.
