CCKW, 2 1/2 Ton Truck

Trucks such as this vehicle, known as the "Deuce and a half" because of its 2 1/2 ton cargo capacity, played a vital logistical role. Many variations of the truck existed, including this open cab, soft top model. The most famous use of the CCKW was in the Red Ball Express, the massive transportation effort named after fast-moving freight trains, in which over 5,000 vehicles maintained supply lines to and from front line forces after the D-Day landing. The majority of drivers in the convoys were African Americans, reflecting a segregated military in which black troops were often relegated to non-combat but essential roles.
