Grumman F6F Hellcat

Designed to be an improvement over the F4F Wildcat, the F6F Hellcat came into production in June 1942. By the end of the war, over 12,000 were produced. Despite the heavy weight of the predominantly carrier-based Hellcat's powerful Pratt & Whitney engine, the Hellcat was one of the quickest fighters of the war. The Hellcat boasted one of the highest kills ratios of any Allied aircraft. Hellcat pilots, including the top navy Ace David McCampbell, destroyed more than 5,000 enemy aircraft.
