Lockheed P-38

The Lockheed P-38 was one of America's pre-war production fighters and the only fighter aircraft that was in production from the beginning of the war until the end. This very distinct aircraft featured a twin-boomed fuselage that housed two engine nacelles, with the cockpit pod arranged between the engines. All of the aircraft's machine guns were clustered in the nose of the cockpit, unlike the wing-mounted machine gun arrangement in other US fighters. The P-38 saw success in the Pacific theater as a long range fighter, and was the aircraft of the US Army Air Force's top aces, Richard Bong with 40 kills and Thomas McGuire with 38.
