The M4 Sherman tank was the backbone of the US military's armored forces. The 33-ton medium tank carried a crew of five and mounted either a 75 or 76mm main gun, along with one .50 caliber and two .30 caliber machine gun. Although outclassed by some German tanks, such as the Panther and the Tiger, the Sherman was an even match against the Panzer Mk IV. Nearly 50,000 Shermans were produced during the war.
