Douglas SBD Dauntless Dive Bomber

Adopted by the Navy and Marine Corps in 1940, the SBD Dauntless dive bomber was one of the most important aircraft of the Pacific war. Dauntless pilots turned the tide against Japan by sinking four Japanese carriers at the Battle of Midway. Before being retired in mid-1944, Navy and Marine pilots flew more than 1,000,000 operational hours in SDBs. Nearly 6,000 Dauntlesses were built during the war.
