SS Richard M. Johnson Plaque
The Liberty ship was a simple, relatively inexpensive, mass produced cargo ship built in the United States. Liberty ships delivered supplies to all allied forces. Between 1941 and 1945, American Shipyards constructed over 2,000 Liberty ships. Lightly armed with anti-aircraft guns and a larger stern mounted deck gun, Liberty ships were an easy soft target for German submarines and planes, necessitating convoys and escorts for their protection.
